What is a horse show?
A horse show is a judged exhibition with various categories of competition, ranging from distinct disciplines to only specific breeds and everything in between. These competitions can last from one to even three days depending on the size of the competition, and they are often broken into different performance categories called classes. The classes then break up contestants with similar training or characteristics are given the opportunity to compete against one another for ribbons, trophies and often prize money.
From Agricultural Fairs to International Productions
Although horse sportsmanship dates back 7th century B.C.E. when humans first mastered the horse, the modern day horse show originally began as small sections at agricultural fairs. These were informal events for advertising and promoting the improvement of every type of horse to attract buyers. These soon became developed attractions that judged horses and in 1864 the first international horse show was produced by the Royal Dublin Society in Dublin. Today these horse associations and pony clubs are part of the blood of equine sports with various different events, disciplines and categories.
